Ways to measure bandwidth utilization.

Web interface on managed switch. Some switches have a web-based monitoring utility built-in.

Packet sniffing software. This must be run on a computer that is attached to a port on the network that receives all network traffic. This port could be provided by a hub inserted between the switch and the WAN connection, or it could be a monitoring port on the switch itself.

Assuming the printer has a small print server device, is connected to the network and is turned on...

1) Configure the print server with a static IP address outside the range that is handed out via DHCP. Document this IP address for future reference.

OR

1a) Configure the Windows DHCP server with an IP address reservation for the print server.

Network Administration Guide

This guide was designed to help minimize the challenges faced after implementation of a Windows 2000 Server based network. This guide is devoted to describing the tasks that a network administrator is most likely to face working day to day with the Local Area Network (LAN).

This guide is by no means an exhaustive list of the responsibilities of a network administrator. However, the intent of this guide is to provide assistance to those who are not trained in network administration but are faced with the responsibility of managing a Windows 2000 domain.

Appletalk is an obsolete network protocol once used with Apple Macintosh computers. It does not use TCP/IP.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is used to automatically provide TCP/IP settings to computers on a network. Computers that receive their configuration this way are said to have a dynamic IP address.

DNS (Domain Name System) is a technology to match up a computer's name with its IP address. Names are easy for people to remember, but computers and network equipment only understand numbers.

Network Administration Training and Toolkits

Network Administration Toolkit Overview
Compumentor developed these toolkits for our Community Technology Center Apprenticeship Program. We are now sharing these tools with organizations interested in teaching their students basic Systems Administration skills. The toolkits do not include all you need to know about Systems Administration, but they do provide a good starting point!

What Is Included in the Training Toolkits?
These toolkits were designed to complement and enrich the Apprentices knowledge about desktop support and System Administration. The training utilizes an experiential and hands-on approach to learning with each week’s lesson highlighting a skill or task that most Systems Administrators would be asked to do if they were a lab manager.
