@Gabe - I highly recommend bbpress though it is a bit of an infant right now. It's crazy fast and lightweight too. The fact that it's a sister to Wordpress is a huge benefit. If you want something a bit more mature, I'd recommend PHPBB (http://www.phpbb.com) or maybe even Vanilla (http://www.getvanilla.com). In the blog post I reference below, I recommend Dreamhost because they offer free hosting to 501(c)3 organizations. In addition, they offer one-click (very simple) installs of Wordpress, ActiveCollab (like basecamp) an phpBB. Hope this helps!
This is a great topic so I thought I'd devote a blog post to it. I took a somewhat different approach. Please let me know what other types of software you're looking for and I'll post my recommendations for those too. http://eleven21.com/blog/?p=35

BB host?
I'm using and loving basecamp - the best online tool interface I've ever come across.
Now, can anyone recommend a good, solid bulletin board host - something *simple*?
Thanks.
