 <title>Troubleshooting Strategies for deskside support.</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;This document is a work in progress. You (yes, you!) are encouraged to make improvements.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A Generic Computer Troubleshooting Process&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Problem appears.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;User requests support.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Tech repeats back his understanding of the problem.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Tech attempts to recreate problem.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Upon replicating problem, tech records what caused problem to appear.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Tech records error message(s), if any.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Tech reviews appropriate log file (such as the Windows Event Viewer) and notes information of interest.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;If error messages are not obviously meaningful, tech researches them using appropriate resource. Google Groups, EventID.net, the vendor&#039;s knowledgebase are the best places to start.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Using information gleaned from the Web, Tech solves problem.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Tech confirms problem resolved with user.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Tech documents problem in knowledge base and indexes problem underÃƒâ€šÃ‚Â users request and tech interpretation.&lt;/li&gt;

 <title>Computer Networking Terms</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Appletalk&lt;/strong&gt; is an obsolete network protocol once used with Apple Macintosh computers. It does not use TCP/IP.
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)&lt;/strong&gt; is used to automatically provide TCP/IP settings to computers on a network. Computers that receive their configuration this way are said to have a dynamic IP address.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DNS (Domain Name System)&lt;/strong&gt; is a technology to match up a computer&amp;#39;s name with its IP address. Names are easy for people to remember, but computers and network equipment only understand numbers.
