An Introduction to Internet Security in the Workplace

Author: Susan Tenby, Community Manager, TechSoup.org

The transfer of sensitive information on the Web is inevitable. With hackers on the rise,
even the altruistic nonprofit world is not totally safe. From protecting
yourself from shoulder surfing in the office to safeguarding your organization
from major hacking endeavors, you can never be too careful.

This article
is sort of a Security 101 for the office. It focuses on the following three
categories:

1. How to intelligently choose a password

Toolbox

Computer Security Day materials

CompuMentor conducted a series of Computer Security Day workshops (also referred to as Virus Vaccination Day) in 2003 and 2004. I have attached a couple of the more useful documents from these trainings that people may find useful for end-user training.

Working with Norton.doc is an overview of the installation and use of the Norton Internet Security software suite.

Virus FAQ.doc is a frequently asked questions about computer viruses document.

Install Worknotes.doc is a worksheet for noting issues arising during the install of Norton Internet Security.

Intro to Internet Security.doc is an overview of common network security issues written for the end-user.

Toolbox

Exabyte Tape Drives

Summarized from discussion on riders-tech

Thomas Taylor asked if the Exabyte VXA-2 Packet Tape drive is as good a deal as it seems at less than $900 for the drive. The other two drives he looked at (SDLT and LTO) were more than twice as expensive.

Benjamin Hendricks and Daniel Scharfman replied that they have had good experiences with the Exabyte drives, but noted the tapes are expensive. That point led Scott Dietrich to add that the LTO-2 could be more cost-effective depending on the tape rotation scheme.

Toolbox
