My esteemed colleague Brent Emerson wrote this very thorough yet readable primer on DNS and SMTP for our friends in the Tech Underground, but then decided it should just be disseminated widely, so I'm finally getting around to posting it. If you ever have to deal with DNS issues or mail delivery issues, or if you just want to plug some holes in your general understanding of how these systems work, have a look. It's written for technology integrators, but probably useful for anybody who ever has to touch DNS or email configuration for a client, including many Web developers.
Over the past two months there has been an increase in targeted hacking attacks against pro-Tibetan NGO's and Individuals. These attacks appear to have been primarily focused on installing Trojan software on end user PC's for the collection of data through keystroke logging and other methods.
Are technology projects a source of frustration, confusion, or excessive cost within your organization? Are you curious about whether you're following best practices and selecting the best tools as you apply technology in your programs and operations? Would you like to meet others solving similar problems and facing similar challenges?
Managing Nonprofit Technology Projects is an event series designed to help you better manage technology projects in your nonprofit or as a consultant to nonprofits. Idealware and Aspiration are hosting our second Nonprofit Technology Project Management event in Oakland, California on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20th and 21st, 2008. The first event in New York was a big success, and sold out well in advance.
A detailed agenda for the event is now available at http://mntp.aspirationtech.org/index.php/Event_Agenda. The agenda will continue to evolve up to and during the event, as we dialog with participants and strive to meet specific needs in the domain of technology project management for nonprofits.
Informal, information-rich, discussion-based sessions will allow participants to compare processes, tools, successes, and lessons learned. We will discuss areas such as team collaboration, project planning, software selection, migration, and project roll-out, and map out the software tools – from project management packages to collaborative communication to issue tracking and more – that support successful technology projects.
Complete details are at

And please blog it, forward it, and otherwise let folks know about this unique event.
We look forward to seeing you there!

This year’s NetSquared Conference will bring together a unique mix of people from the public and private sectors to develop and release Mashups designed to provide deeper insight into the social issues affecting communities around the globe. Highlighted will be the 21 Featured Projects voted on by the NetSquared community in round one of the Mashup Challenge.
If we’re successful, we’ll learn something about cross-sector collaboration, meet new and interesting people, and build unique Mashups that citizens, schools, and community-based groups everywhere can learn from, replicate, and build upon.
We have limited seats open to the public, so please register here.
A number of seats have also been set aside for our Sponsors, Engineers, Web Developers, etc. Please contact us if you belong in one of these categories.
Not Membership Software and Association Management Software is equal to the task of managing the membership information of volunteer and non-profit organizations and associations. Most such organizations simply lack the resources to devote to proactive membership management. The answer to this common problem is to automate online member services and integrate them with your membership software.
Does anyone know what happened to trainingpoint.org?
I'm looking for examples of non-profits that have used web 2.0 technologies to improve internal communitcation and sense of community among staff. Any ideas?
I created a company about 2 years ago to provide some legal protection when I did a project for a friend of mine. Since then, I have decided to try and take my consulting gig full time. I am curious if people out there have advice on how they landed their first contracts out there, and if they were able to work full time to pay the bills and start their consulting company, or if they had to take a loan out and risk it.
Thanks everyone, glad to have joined the commons!
I'm looking for contact information for folks who might be interested in taking on a RFP for a technical consultant for human services hotline work in Pittsburgh, PA. The project is looking for someone to help two social service agencies in Pittsburgh collaborate on combining hotlines. One is a domestic violence line and the other is a line for all victims of violence and crime. We're very grateful for any contacts you can pass along or help you can provide. Thanks !Vi
